Reading the Signs: Is He Actually Interested?

Interest isn't a mystery — it shows up in effort. The trouble is that hope and anxiety can drown out the signal, so we either over-read a polite reply or miss someone who's genuinely keen. Green flags: effort and consistency
He asks you questions back. He remembers things you said and brings them up later. He moves the conversation forward — suggesting a call or a plan rather than letting it drift. Consistent, balanced effort is the clearest signal there is.
In person, the cues are similar: he gives you his attention, faces you, and isn't glancing at his phone. General overviews of body language note that engagement and orientation toward you tend to track genuine interest far better than any single 'tell'.
Mixed signals: read the pattern, not the moment
One-word replies, long silences followed by 'sorry, been busy', plans that never quite firm up — these are mixed signals. Occasional busyness is normal; everyone has weeks. A repeated pattern, though, is itself an answer.
Resist the urge to decode a single message for hidden meaning. Zoom out: over the last two weeks, has the effort been mutual? Patterns rarely lie, even when individual texts are ambiguous.
The 'just polite' trap
Some people reply warmly to everyone and pursue no one. Warmth without momentum — lots of nice messages but never a plan — is often politeness, not interest. The tell is direction: interested people try to move things forward.
